The plum
About the plum

The plum is one of the main crops of our country. Plum fruits both fresh and processed form are one of the traditional agricultural products, which our country supplies to foreign markets.

Троянска синя слива
Most suitable for growing plum trees in mountainous areas are the slopes with east north-east and north facing, with not a very big slope with good air drainage, and with deep enough and permeable soil. Closed valleys should be avoided, where the damage of low winter temperatures and turning frosts are higher. Very suitable for growing plum trees are the plains of perennial rivers with silt rich alluvial soil.

The plum is distributed throughout the country. The greatest concentration is achieved in Lovech District followed by the regions of Gabrovo, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Vratsa, Shumen and Smolyan.

The main variety in our country is the Kyustendil Plum. It is known as the Winter Plum or Madzharkinya. It has been grown from 17th - 18th century along with a large number of local brandy varieties. With the significant increase of the plum trees area after World War One, the variety Kyustendil Plum gets more widespread. There have been many varieties and branches thereof, which differ in size and shape of the fruit forms, the crown forms, efflorescence time, etc. In industrial plants, large-fruited varieties selected precious and branches of Kyustendil Plum as DL-1, D-16, PAT-12 and others dominate. They were selected in IPZHZ - Trojan, and D-2 and D-4 selected at Fruit Growing Experimental Station - Dryanovo.

The fruits of Kyustendil Plum are very valuable for both fresh consumption and for different types of processing, mainly for drying. The tree is vigorous and very fruitful. From a single tree 250-300 kg fruits are picked. Due to the late efflorescence, it doesn’t suffer from turning spring frosts. The most significant drawback of this variety is its susceptibility to diseases and air drought as well as inadequate size of the fruit.
